How to sell your offers online without an established audience: 10 Key Tactics

Selling without an established audience can be challenging but not impossible. I can tell you that navigating this online space and business in general can feel super intimating. This involves leveraging strategies to get visibility, generating interest, and building trust with potential customers; and more importantly attracting the right audience for your offer. So let’s look at some effective strategies to get you started:
1. Define your target audience
Research: clearly define who your ideal customer is, what are their pain points, needs, and desires? The more specific, the better.
Niche down: sometimes, targeting a very specific audience can lead to better results because you face less competition and you are clear about your messaging and speak to your ideal clients’ painpoints.
2. Leverage existing platforms: if you’re selling physical products, platforms like Etsy, eBay, Amazon, or even Facebook Marketplace already have millions of users you can access without needing your own audience. If you are offering services, consider Upwork, Fiverr, or local job boards that connect service providers with clients. I personally use payhip and gumroad as additional marketplaces to sell my digital offers.
3. Partner with influencers or affiliates
Influencer marketing: you can collaborate with micro-influencers or bloggers who already have the audience you are targeting. They can promote your product to their followers in exchange for payment or a commission.
Affiliate programs: set up an affiliate marketing program where people can promote your products or services in exchange for a commission. This gives them incentive to spread the word about your offering. I personally run one and incentivize my affiliates with a 25% commission.
4. Paid advertising: platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Google allow you to create highly targeted ads to reach your ideal customers. With the right ad copy and a small budget, you can start attracting buyers even if you have no audience. If your product or service is something people actively search for, consider using Google Ads to capture search traffic.
5. SEO and Content Marketing
Search Engine Optimization (SEO): create content (like blogs or videos) that answers questions your target customers might have. Even without an audience, SEO helps you rank in search engines over time.
Online communities: Engage on forums, Q&A sites (like Quora or Reddit), or industry-specific discussion boards where your target audience might be asking questions; you can start by providing value, then subtly promote your product.
6. Freebies or trials
Free samples/trials: if possible, give away a free version of your product or service to get people to try it. This builds trust and helps create word-of-mouth promotion.
Lead magnets: offer something of value (a free guide, checklist, or tool) in exchange for email sign-ups. This can be the start of building an email list you can sell to later.
7. Networking & Cold Outreach
Networking: attend industry events, trade shows, or networking events to meet people who may be interested in what you’re selling or can refer you to potential customers.
Cold outreach: send personalized emails or direct messages to potential clients explaining how you can solve their specific problems. Be careful not to come across as spammy.
8. Building trust: once you have some initial sales, ask for reviews or testimonials to build credibility; highlight any partnerships, certifications, or notable mentions your product or service has received.
9. Incentives for word-of-mouth: encourage your early buyers to refer others by offering them discounts or rewards for bringing in new customers. Create engaging, shareable content (such as infographics, how-to guides, or entertaining videos) that people are likely to share with their networks, extending your reach.
10. Email marketing: if you are just starting, it is important to capture emails even from casual visitors. Build an email list and nurture it with valuable content, offers, and information. This can become a key asset over time.
